Established by the Assembly of Major Superiors of the fifty Women's Religious Institutes in Lebanon, and registered as AL RIAYA on November 26th, 1992, under the number 22 at the Directorate General of Cooperatives. Alriaya is a symbol of solidarity, being itself the fruit of solidarity.
In 1991, after 17 years of war, the “Assembly” decided to put together its efforts in order to face the healthcare difficulties in a country with limited healthcare infrastructure where access to medical care has become a luxury. It did put solidarity to the test among the nuns and their associates and all their educational establishments, hospitals, and social institutions. Thanks to the collaboration with the National Alliance of Christian Mutuality in Belgium (ANML), a field study was undertaken in order to consider the advantages and administrative requirements of creating a social and medical mutual fund. Primarily, the majority of women's religious congregations have joined Alriaya and encouraged their employees to do the same. They even paid their employees membership fees or contributed a percentage proportional to their salaries.
